Bigger orders and a fatter backlog
Leonardo raised its full-year orders outlook to roughly €29.5 billion as interest surged in its helicopters and defense electronics businesses. The order backlog reached €60.4 billion (about $68 billion) at Sept. 30, giving the company clearer visibility on future production. New orders in the first nine months climbed 28% to €23.3 billion.
Profits ahead of estimates, cash tailwind
Third quarter revenue came in at €5.34 billion, up 18% year over year, while operating profit rose 43% to €521 million. Both topped expectations. Cash flow also got a boost from €135 million of dividends - mostly from missile maker MBDA - that landed in Q3 rather than Q2, according to Mediobanca analyst Alessandro Pozzi.
Stock reaction and what management is pushing
Even with improving profitability, the stock slipped as much as 3.3%, tracking a broader defense decline linked to rising hopes for a peace agreement involving Iran and to Rheinmetall AG's guidance cut. Chief Executive Officer Lorenzo Mariani, who joined earlier this year, is focused on tightening operations and turning stronger demand into profit as Europe's defense buildout drives activity.

Why it matters for your portfolio
More orders and a larger backlog mean steadier revenue ahead, even if sector headlines shake the shares in the short run. The dividend timing help is one-off, but the beats on sales and operating profit point to better execution. The bottom line: this story rides on sustained European military spending rather than quarter-to-quarter noise.
