What happened
Chinese government officials visited Australia in late October to assess how canola moves from farm to export, according to Agriculture Minister Julie Collins. Speaking while in China, she said the visitors have delivered their findings and that Australia will keep working with Beijing to fully reopen the market. In a phone interview she added, "We're very confident in that product, and industry has obviously done a lot of work to make sure that our product meets the exacting standards and the safety requirements."
Why it matters
Australia is the world's No. 2 exporter of canola, yet it lost access to China in 2020 when Beijing said tests found blackleg in parts of the trade. Limited access resumed last year on a trial basis, and Australian shippers now want full, regular entry to what is a valuable destination. The October audit is being viewed as another step toward normal commercial flows in the crop.
What comes next
Her office said Collins was in China earlier this week for talks with government counterparts, among them officials at the General Administration of Customs and the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs. She is also set to attend the China International Import Expo in Shanghai on Friday to promote Australian farm goods. Relations have warmed since Prime Minister Anthony Albanese's Labor government took office in 2022, enabling China to lift import curbs imposed during the Covid period on barley, wine and beef.

The bottom line: More predictable canola trade would matter for growers, crushers, and shippers. If market access keeps improving, it could steady volumes and pricing for Australia's oilseed supply chain - and for portfolios with exposure to ag producers and commodity exporters.
