What moved markets
European lenders surged Wednesday as a decisive Democratic victory in the US midterms cleared away election jitters. Falling government borrowing costs added support, helping unwind the pressure that built before the vote.
The Stoxx 600 Banks Index was up as much as 4.5%, set for its strongest session since May. Heavyweights HSBC and Santander drove performance; Lion Finance Group climbed 5.9%, and Raiffeisen Bank International added 6.4%. US banking peers were also higher before the opening bell.
The backdrop
This bounce comes after a steep pullback in the weeks heading into the election. After peaking at an all-time high in early September, the sector retreated as a sharp jump in US and European yields stoked worries about credit quality and potential defaults. Even so, European banks remain up 11% for the year.
US Treasury yields fell as results arrived, with investors wagering the new political setup will temper the Trump administration's tax and spending ambitions. Yields in the UK, France and Italy also declined.

What strategists said
"Banks were markedly de-risked before the midterms despite strong fundamentals. With no uncertainty left, we are now seeing a strong relief rally," said Ulrich Urbahn, Berenberg's head of multi-asset strategy and research. "It was a sell-the-rumor, buy-the-fact event."
Geoff Yu of BNY, who works as a senior macro strategist, said, "The broader view is that if financial conditions become less restrictive and growth becomes more broad-based, that's good for financials." "A steep curve doesn't help profitability when people are not borrowing and credit risks rise."
Why it matters for your portfolio
Politics and bond markets are steering bank stocks in tandem: fewer policy unknowns and easing yields brighten the near-term outlook, but credit risk still sets the boundary. In plain English, funding gets cheaper, yet lending appetite and borrower health remain the swing factors.
