Results From the Third Quarter
Cnooc reported a 2.7% rise in net income to 33.3 billion yuan, or $5 billion, alongside a 7.6% lift in sales to 113 billion yuan. Revenue directly from oil and gas drilling showed a larger gain, up 19% to 99.3 billion yuan.
Production ticked upward, and third-quarter output reached 195 million barrels of oil equivalent. Gas output had been curbed earlier in the year as maintenance at some fields affected the first half.
Industry Drivers
Energy prices rallied sharply as supply disruptions in the Persian Gulf took hold. The Iran war's effects lifted Brent by roughly one third during the quarter, with Brent ending the period at $91 a barrel. With a heavy tilt toward upstream work, Cnooc's earnings tend to swing more with global prices than many rivals.
China's oil majors showed how different business mixes play out when prices move. PetroChina said net income rose 22% earlier in the week, with its drilling operations providing a major boost. Sinopec, more focused on downstream businesses, posted a 64% jump in third-quarter net income as refining margins improved.

Why It Matters For Your Portfolio
Cnooc is central to China's energy self-sufficiency push, investing globally and taking on harder deepwater projects. That upstream focus magnifies the link between commodity moves and earnings, which helps explain a modest profit rise alongside a sharp oil rally. The bottom line: if you hold energy producers that lean upstream, your results may track price swings more closely than integrated peers.
