Apple acknowledges inner-screen failures on some iPhone Duos, offers replacements

Published Oct 26, 2026
Share:
Summary:
  • Apple's first foldable, the iPhone Duo, launched Friday starting at $1,999, drawing long lines and extended pre-order wait times.
  • Over the weekend, some owners reported inner displays showing bright horizontal lines from the hinge; Apple said Monday the issue hits a "small number" of units and eligible devices will be swapped under AppleCare.
  • Out-of-warranty inner display fixes cost $999, according to Apple's website.

Hot debut, mixed early app support

Apple's first foldable hit stores on Friday, priced from $1,999, and demand showed up as queues and long pre-order delays. Early reviewers liked the Duo when opened up for multitasking and watching video, but also noted that many apps were not yet tuned to the larger, wider screens. On Monday, Apple said apps are already being updated for the new form factor. "The response to iPhone Duo from early users has been incredibly positive, and we are seeing exciting things from developers who are rapidly updating their apps to take advantage of its unique form factor," an Apple representative said.

Reports of screen failures and Apple's remedy

Some first-weekend buyers say their inner displays failed, with bright horizontal lines radiating from the hinge area. Many of the reports surfaced as anonymous posts on Reddit and X, and bogus images are also making the rounds. Apple confirmed Monday it knows about the problem affecting a "small number" of iPhone Duo units and will replace impacted devices through AppleCare.

"We are aware of an issue impacting the inner display on a small number of iPhone Duo units," an Apple representative told CNBC. "If users experience issues with their iPhone Duo display, they should contact AppleCare for a replacement." Apple lists a $999 price for an inner-screen repair if the phone is out of warranty.

Teardown hints at the hinge

iFixit took the Duo apart on Sunday and put it through dust testing, then suggested the hinge geometry could be involved. "Many of these damage reports describe folding or unfolding the phone, hearing a crunch, and pushing past it," iFixit technician Shahram Mokhtari said in the teardown video.

The bigger foldable picture for your portfolio

Fragile foldable screens are not new. Back in 2019, reviewers found that the inner display on an early Samsung folding phone cracked under routine use, a setback that slowed adoption of the category. For investors, two threads matter here: near term, Apple is moving to replace defective units and says developer support is ramping, which can cushion user sentiment; longer term, the durability of the hinge and display will shape return rates and margins on a $1,999-and-up device where a single out-of-warranty screen fix runs $999. The bottom line: watch for Apple's update cadence and any shift in repair or warranty costs as tells on how the Duo's hardware risk is tracking.

Are We in a Recession? 5 Threats to the Economy and Where the Money Is Moving
  • The S&P 500 is up about 13% this year, but without AI it's in a bear market, with nearly 40% of its companies down more than 20% for four months or longer.

  • The opportunities he's watching mostly sit outside the dollar: rising economies like Brazil and Indonesia, US-backed emerging market bonds paying 7% to 9%, and the shifts that fear creates.

Common Investing Mistakes: Why a Stock Grade Is One Tool, Not the Whole Toolkit
  • The Briefs Score shows growth, income, and wealth preservation investors how well a stock fits their goal, with a separate letter grade for each one.
  • The most common mistake is treating the letter as an instruction. An A tells you a stock scores well for one goal, not that you should buy today.
  • Research works best as one input in a process you own. The grade shows how a stock stacks up. You supply the goal, the timeline, and the rules for being wrong.

How to Tell an Asset From a Liability: The One Question to Ask Before You Buy Anything
  • The typical American household earned more in 2025 than in any year on record, yet only 30% of Americans say they could pay a surprise $1,000 bill from savings, so the problem isn't income but what the income gets spent on.
  • An asset puts money in your pocket and a liability takes money out, and the wealthy buy assets first, then let the assets pay for the fun stuff.
  • Before you buy anything, ask one question: does this put money in my pocket, or take money out of my pocket? Then you need a plan for the money you keep.

How to Build Your First $2,000 Emergency Fund and Wipe Out Every Debt Over 10%

  • Once the $2,000 is there, attack every debt charging more than 10% interest, highest rate first, because you can't out-invest a 22% credit card so paying it off is the investment.
