Lego owners' fund plans to double climate portfolio and go big on plastics recycling

Summary:
  • Kirkbi Climate plans to double its $1.6 billion portfolio over the next five years.
  • Plastics recycling will be an area where the unit plans to invest heavily as the EU's PPWR targets all packaging being recyclable by 2030.
  • At the close of the year, Kirkbi's assets stood at 189 billion kroner ($29 billion), while Kirkbi Climate, spun out last year, is responsible for 10 billion kroner.

What Kirkbi Climate said

Kirkbi's climate arm is preparing to step up spending on plastics technologies, with plastics recycling "an area where we plan to invest heavily," CEO Anupam Bhargava said. He said the unit plans for its $1.6 billion portfolio to reach about twice its size within five years.

Looking ahead, capital will be divided about 50/50 between energy and recycling, concentrating on plastics and select EU markets. Following over ten years in climate investing, the team plans a more involved style, aiming for ownership positions large enough to wield "real influence" in boardrooms.

Why EU rules matter to the strategy

The EU's Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation aims for all packaging to be recyclable by 2030, part of a broader push to cut emissions and waste. Those rules "will create added confidence for investors like us that the market will eventually mature," Bhargava said. "We can dive in knowing that the market economics don't work today, but if there's no chance for the market economics to ever work, then that's very difficult."

Today, the economics are tough. The EU estimates about 35 kilograms, or 77 pounds, of plastic packaging waste per person each year, much of it from imported fossil fuels. Recycling has struggled thanks to thin investment and petrochemical prices that often make virgin plastic cheaper than recycled material. For now, "there's no solution where you can invest in a technology company and that will produce amazing results," Bhargava said, pointing to a value chain that is "highly fragmented and not very efficient." With deadlines approaching, "the industry needs to get ready now," he added.

What it means for your money

By the end of the year, the holding company behind the Lego Group - Kirkbi - had assets totaling 189 billion kroner ($29 billion). Kirkbi Climate, which manages 10 billion kroner, supports plastics recycling as well as projects tied to the energy transition and land use.

The signal here is clear: patient, long-term capital is moving into the nuts and bolts of how materials get made and reused. If EU packaging rules push the system to scale up and streamline, the business math for recycling could look very different by 2030.

Steady investors focus on resilient strategies that balance purpose with long term financial goals. Our CEO Jaspreet Singh is hosting a FREE live investor workshop, How to Profit From A Dollar That's Losing its Value, on September 29th. Sign up free to join him live.

Your 401k Is Fueling the AI Bubble
  • About $10 trillion of 401k money sits in a $77 trillion stock market, mostly through target date funds and S&P 500 funds. Roughly 30% of every S&P 500 dollar lands in five AI-heavy tech stocks.
  • Four bubble signals run hotter today than before the 2000 crash: top-ten concentration, tech's share of the index, the Buffett Indicator, and how much of the market index funds own.
  • You only lock in an AI bubble loss if you sell. The 2022, 2020, 2008, and 2000 crashes were all buying windows for long-term investors, and the US-China AI race means government money could keep flowing in.

What Is Wealth Preservation? How To Protect Your Money From Anything
  • Wealth preservation is an investing strategy built around keeping the money you've already made instead of chasing growth.
  • It leans on assets that hold steady when markets fall - gold, Treasury bonds, and companies that keep earning through wars, crashes, and pandemics.
  • The tradeoff is real: you give up some upside, and the two key numbers to check are maximum drawdown and correlation to the market.

Why Is Everything So Expensive? Why Prices May Never Come Back Down
  • Official inflation is 3.4% and prices are up 32% since 2020, but rent (41%), gas (47%), car insurance (64%) and ground beef (79%) all outran the 28% median wage.
  • The Federal Reserve targets 2% inflation on purpose. Rising prices push extra dollars to investors and shrink the real cost of a $40 trillion national debt.
  • Investors who simply owned the S&P 500 gained about 150% over the same six years, and the Fed's September 16 decision will show whether it protects the dollar or the economy first.

An Interest Rate Hike in 2026? The Fed Just Broke Its Own Script
  • The Federal Reserve spent a year signaling cheaper money, and its new chairman just warned that an interest rate hike may be coming instead.
  • The Fed is stuck between high inflation and a weak job market, and fixing one makes the other worse.
  • Higher rates also reprice roughly a third of America's $40 trillion national debt this year, which is why Washington wants cuts so badly.

  • The government took in about $5 trillion in taxes in 2025 and spent about $7 trillion, and the national debt is now over $40 trillion.
