What's changing and when
Seychelles-based CoinEx is shutting its doors after nearly a decade. The exchange will halt new account registrations starting Sept. 15 and plans to discontinue most trading and other services by Sept. 29. Users will still be able to pull out funds until Dec. 22.
What happens to your coins
If assets remain on the platform after Sept. 29, CoinEx may sell them into USDT. Any USDT still on the platform after Dec. 22 will be transferred to an independent custody arrangement that charges a monthly fee equal to 5% of the original balance. Users can claim those custody-held funds until Aug. 22, 2028.
Why CoinEx is calling it quits
CoinEx pointed to a long stretch of weak market conditions, thinner trading activity and liquidity, and higher regulatory expectations and compliance costs as the reasons to shut down. Founder and CEO Haipo Yang posted on X, "After much reflection, I have come to accept a hard truth," and added, "The security and compliance risks of running a crypto exchange have become increasingly difficult to contain." He said he weighed selling the platform but chose a "clean ending" instead. "Nine years, millions of users. "But I can give it a decent ending: making sure users can withdraw their assets in full, giving my employees a dignified farewell."

The bigger backdrop
According to CoinEx, its customers span over 200 countries and regions. Earlier this year, TRM Labs reported that from 2019 onward the platform processed more than $3.8 billion associated with Iranian entities, with transactions involving Nobitex as well as other sanctioned counterparties. For your wallet, the message is simple: crypto platforms can change fast, so timelines, fees, and withdrawal mechanics matter as much as prices when you are deciding where to keep your assets.
