What China announced
China said it is engaging the US and Russia on a potential three-leader meeting during this month's Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation summit. At a regular briefing in Beijing on Wednesday, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning delivered that line when asked whether there were plans for the three to meet in Shenzhen.
Who wants the meeting
Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin have each publicly expressed interest in taking part in a meeting with Xi Jinping at the APEC gathering. Mao's comments, made roughly two weeks before the summit is set to kick off, suggested Beijing is open to the idea.

Why it matters and the context
A sitdown would bring together the leaders of three nuclear-armed states in a format with no recent precedent. Roosevelt and UK Prime Minister Winston Churchill convened to talk about reshaping Europe as Nazi Germany was approaching defeat in World War II. Such a meeting could also advance Russia's bid to ease its international isolation after its invasion of Ukraine, while potentially positioning Xi as a go-between for Putin and Trump.
