Dollar logs biggest one-day gain in a month as yields climb and Middle East headlines sway FX

Published Nov 3, 2026
Share:
Summary:
  • The Bloomberg Dollar Spot Index rose 0.3% on Tuesday, its largest daily gain since Oct. 1, as Americans voted in the midterms.
  • This week's moves underscored how oil and talk of easing US-Iran tensions could steer the greenback in the days ahead.
  • CIBC finds that FX volatility metrics treat the midterms as roughly equal in risk to a standard US consumer price release.

What moved the dollar

The dollar posted its strongest advance in a month, lifted by higher Treasury yields and firm economic readings, while investors watched Middle East developments for direction. The Bloomberg Dollar Spot Index added 0.3% Tuesday, leaving it near this year's peak, a level first hit last month when hotter inflation reinforced expectations for more Federal Reserve tightening.

A rebound in the artificial intelligence trade also offered support to the currency.

Oil, US-Iran headlines and the options read

This week's trading highlighted that oil, plus speculation about progress toward resolving the US-Iran standoff, may be the main near term drivers. The greenback dropped with crude on Monday and, on Tuesday, eased further amid indications that both parties were taking steps and on reports that President Donald Trump aimed to allow negotiations with Iran to move ahead.

Positioning in options echoed that shift, with enthusiasm for dollar calls fading into the election. The premium for call contracts narrowed, as reflected in one week risk reversals tracked for the Bloomberg dollar index.

What to watch next

Sarah Ying of CIBC, who heads foreign-exchange strategy, said, "For the US dollar, oil remains the most important near-term driver to watch and any outsized move there will more than likely supersede any midterm impact." "We like positioning for USD downside, given that the US administration has taken a more conciliatory tone on Iran in recent days (though this could change after the election)." CIBC's work shows that currency volatility indicators assign the midterms a risk profile comparable to a typical US consumer-price report.

"What would be more important to watch is what happens with Trump's post-midterm agenda, particularly with Iran and with trade negotiations," Ying wrote. The bottom line: oil and policy headlines could matter more for your FX exposure than the election tape.
