Venezuela Negotiates Second Aluminum Shipment To U.S.

Published Nov 3, 2026
Share:
Summary:
  • Venezuela is arranging a second aluminum cargo to the US as a gesture toward reopening commerce after years of economic and diplomatic turmoil.
  • Per individuals briefed on the matter, Mercuria Energy Group and Heeney Capital have opened negotiations with Venezuelan officials.
  • The load is expected to leave by year end, with terms likely to resemble a 15,000 metric ton shipment that landed in New Orleans in late September.

What is happening now

Mercuria and Heeney are negotiating a follow up aluminum cargo with Venezuelan officials, people familiar with the talks said. They requested anonymity because the negotiations are private.

Those people said the terms will likely mirror a 15,000 metric ton delivery that reached New Orleans in late September, and the new cargo is anticipated to depart before the year ends. Venezuela's Information Ministry, along with Heeney and Mercuria, did not provide a response to requests for comment right away.

The bigger push into metals

Though the consignments from state owned Venalum are small, they add momentum to US and other companies expanding into Venezuela's mining and metals sector.

It also underscores an internal contradiction within President Donald Trump's metals strategy. The administration is enabling Venezuelan aluminum shipments even as it relies on steep tariffs to protect US producers from supplies coming from other countries.

Learning how AI interprets market developments can sharpen your long term investing edge. We're hosting our first ever investor livestream on 11/17 to show you how to use ChatGPT and Claude to invest like a pro, hosted by Briefs Finance CEO Jaspreet Singh. Save your seat.

Diplomacy and deal flow

Since January, the countries have been rebuilding commercial links following the US seizure of Venezuela's former President Nicolás Maduro. On Monday, Venezuela's newly appointed Foreign Minister Oliver Blanco met in Washington with Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent.

Separately, Mercuria and New York based Heeney are in talks with Venezuelan authorities about operating the Venalum smelter, Bloomberg previously reported.

What it means for your portfolio

In plain English: small volumes, big signal. A second cargo would underline a thaw in trade and the administration's focus on securing critical materials. If these flows continue, watch how US tariffs shape price spreads and which North American producers or traders gain from tighter, politically managed supply lines.

Adopting thoughtful technology helps investors spot subtle opportunities others might miss. On 11/17, our CEO Jaspreet Singh goes live for our first ever investor livestream on how to use ChatGPT and Claude to invest like a pro. Register to join him.
