What changed and who is affected
JetBlue lifted checked-bag fees for many economy travelers, marking a third hike in under a year. Some customers are exempt, including those with a co-branded JetBlue credit card and flyers with elite frequent flyer status.
The new price grid
During nonpeak periods, the first checked bag now costs $50 if you pay at least 24 hours before your flight, up from $45, and $60 if you pay within the final 24 hours. In peak periods such as holidays or summer, the first bag costs $55 when paid a day or more ahead, up from $49, and $70 when purchased inside the final 24 hours.
Why fees are rising and who might follow
JetBlue tied the move to rising costs, stating, "We're adjusting checked bag fees to help offset rising fuel and operating costs." Since the Iran war began in February, jet fuel - airlines' largest cost other than labor - has about doubled this year, burdening carriers with billions in extra expense and driving fares upward. The U.S. Energy Information Administration said jet fuel was $4.44 a gallon on Tuesday in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico. As is typical, rivals tend to match such moves; following JetBlue's previous hike, several major U.S. airlines raised fees earlier this year. Earlier coverage of the changes appeared on the Thrifty Traveler blog.

The bottom line for your portfolio
Higher fuel costs are squeezing airline margins, and bag fees are one lever carriers are pulling to defend profits. If fuel stays elevated, expect more ancillary fee tweaks across the industry, which can support revenue even when base fares stay competitive.
