Inflation moved higher in October
Uganda's headline inflation reached 5.8% in October, the highest in three years, up from 4.6% in September, per the Uganda Bureau of Statistics. Rising energy and food costs did most of the pushing. Core inflation, which strips out volatile categories, picked up to 4.4% from 3.7% and sits just under the central bank's 5% target.
That acceleration coincided with a steep drop in the shilling over the past three months, making imports more expensive. By one yardstick, the currency was the world's second worst performer in that stretch.
Currency pressure and policy reaction
The Bank of Uganda called an emergency policy meeting this month to steady the shilling and anchor inflation expectations. It raised the policy rate to 12% from 9.75%, the biggest move in 15 years, and later sold dollars into the market. By 1:16 p.m. in Kampala, the shilling traded 2.5% stronger at 4,245 per dollar.
What this means for your portfolio
Earlier this week, Yvonne Mhango, director of African Research Content and Africa economist at Bloomberg, said the shilling had weakened more than was necessary to shrink the external funding gap and would probably recover part of its decline. In plain English, a weaker currency and pricier energy imports are feeding into inflation, which can flow through to interest rates, local bond yields, and the earnings of companies with dollar-linked costs.

The bottom line: if the shilling stabilizes and policy tightening bites, inflation pressures could ease, but the path runs through currency moves, energy import dynamics, and how aggressively the central bank keeps defending its 5% core inflation target.
