The ask: cut non-energy charges and move fast
Eurelectric says households need further relief as wholesale costs return to peaks reminiscent of the 2022 energy crisis. In a letter to EU energy ministers, the group pressed for "targeted, time-limited" interventions and urged governments to take "non-energy costs" off bills, naming grid charges and environmental levies.
What is driving the spike
The group ties this year's fuel surge to conflict in the Middle East, which has roiled global energy markets and driven higher costs for gas and other fuels. That strain is showing up in wallets and on the streets, fueling protests in several countries, with France highlighted as a flashpoint.
Prices and policy tensions
Across Europe's biggest power markets, winter-delivery electricity is roughly twice last winter's level, approaching 2022 marks. "Once again, Europe is paying the price of its exposure to imported fossil fuels," wrote President Markus Rauramo and Secretary General Kristian Ruby, adding, "Bills are rising for households, energy-intensive industries are under pressure."
Eurelectric also cautioned against subsidizing gas-fired generation - an idea discussed in Italy - saying it would lift gas demand when countries should be cutting it.

What it means for your portfolio
Higher wholesale power costs and pressure on households point to tougher conditions for energy-intensive industries. The bottom line: policy moves that remove non-energy charges could soften bills, while any support for gas-fired generation would do the opposite for gas demand.
