Revenue and the market reaction
Eli Lilly raised its 2026 sales outlook to a band of $91 billion to $92 billion, an increase from the earlier $85 billion to $87 billion range. It is the third time the company has lifted its revenue guidance this year.
The stock jumped 8.6% at Thursday's open in New York, its largest intraday surge since August. Through Wednesday's close, shares were up nearly 20% for the year.
JPMorgan analyst Chris Schott wrote in a note that "Overall, we see today's results and guidance as reinforcing the strong momentum" within Lilly's portfolio.
Sales details and product performance
Quarterly revenue reached $24.4 billion, topping the $22.5 billion average analyst estimate. Diabetes drug Mounjaro brought in $10.7 billion, and weight-loss treatment Zepbound generated $5.35 billion, with both beating expectations.
Foundayo, Lilly's once-daily obesity pill, delivered $184 million in the quarter, short of the $231.2 million estimate. It goes head to head with Novo's Wegovy pill, which hit the market early this year.

Market context, competition, and next bets
Lilly's surging obesity franchise has turned it into the world's most valuable drugmaker, giving it room to push into areas such as women's health and psychedelics. The harder task is keeping the lead while Novo Nordisk works to claw back share.
Coverage shifts, tougher competition, and pricing pressure are changing how the obesity-drug business makes money. Both companies are also chasing next-wave medicines that could work better or be easier to tolerate.
Lilly is advancing retatrutide, an obesity candidate drawing attention for the possibility of greater weight loss than current therapies. It is not approved, its safety and efficacy are still under study, and copycat versions are being peddled on the black market. Lilly plans to seek approval in early 2027.
Coverage rollout and what it means for your portfolio
A federal Bridge program that began in July lets eligible Medicare beneficiaries obtain coverage for Zepbound and Foundayo. Lilly reported that about 500,000 Medicare patients are obtaining its obesity medicines via the program, and roughly seven in ten new entrants are choosing Lilly's products rather than Novo's. On Oct. 7, Department of Health and Human Services Chief Counselor Chris Klomp said the Medicare Bridge program counted around 1.1 million patients.
The bottom line: higher guidance and outsized Q3 beats are fueling the rally, while the Bridge program adds another growth lever. Watch the duel with Novo, pay attention to pricing dynamics, and track the retatrutide timeline as Lilly extends from its current obesity lead into new therapeutic categories.
