Trading start and first-week read
In its early Athens Stock Exchange sessions, Capital Maritime Finance Corp. - a container shipper with Greek billionaire Evangelos Marinakis as its majority owner - rallied before giving back gains later in the week. By Oct. 23, shares finished at €7.53, just above the offering price set earlier in the week, while a large-cap Athens index fell 3% over the same period.
Why retail got the spotlight
Speaking to Bloomberg News, Marinakis said that over half of the shares were allocated to retail investors. He said that split "holds immense importance" because it lets Greek citizens participate in the company, and he added the listing corrected "a historical paradox" by giving domestic investors access to the country's shipping industry. He spoke in New York.
Context and the Marinakis network
Capital Maritime Finance is the inaugural shipping company to secure its main listing on Euronext Athens Holding SA. Earlier this year, dry bulk owners Star Bulk Carriers Corp. and Safe Bulkers Inc. chose dual listings instead. The transaction marks the year's second flotation connected to Marinakis' parent company, Capital Maritime & Trading Corp., following Capital Tankers Corp.'s Oslo listing in March.
Marinakis traveled to the US for the dedication of Massachusetts Maritime Academy's new science facility - bearing the Marinakis family name after contributions to the school - and to attend a performance by the Greek National Opera.
