Trump says no nukes or ground troops for Iran, weighs in on MOAB as Hormuz risks rise

Published Oct 16, 2026

Summary:
  • President Donald Trump told Newsmax he would not use nuclear weapons against Iran and does not anticipate sending in ground troops.
  • He described the GBU-43/B MOAB as a very large conventional bomb, saying, "It's like a tiny nuclear bomb," while stressing it is not nuclear.
  • UKMTO says the threat level is "severe" in the Strait of Hormuz after an incident where the GFS Pride, registered in Singapore, was struck, caught fire, and sank; it has logged eight attacks since Oct. 11 and assesses "deliberate hostile action" as highly likely.

What Trump said on nuclear weapons, the MOAB, and troops

During a Thursday night appearance on Newsmax, President Donald Trump said he had no plans to employ nuclear weapons against Iran and added, "I wouldn't use nuclear. We don't have to."

Pressed about reports on the GBU-43/B, the Massive Ordnance Air Blast known as the "Mother of All Bombs," he emphasized the weapon is conventional, saying, "It's not nuclear at all." He likened it to a tiny nuclear bomb. He did not confirm or deny the reports.

Military planning reported and timing

CNN reported earlier Thursday that the U.S. military drew up updated plans for strikes aimed at Iranian energy infrastructure and nuclear sites. Those strikes would occur only if Trump directs a restart of combat operations, whether that happens before or after the midterm elections. CNBC noted that the White House offered no immediate comment in response to a request.

On Oct. 8, Trump indicated that no renewed military strikes would be authorized ahead of the Nov. 3 midterm elections.

Shipping danger in the Strait of Hormuz and why it matters to you

The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations says the threat level in the Strait of Hormuz remains "severe," after an incident where the container ship GFS Pride, registered in Singapore, was struck by an unidentified projectile, ignited, and later sank. UKMTO assessed "deliberate hostile action" as highly likely and said it has logged eight attacks in the waterway since Oct. 11.

Why this matters for your portfolio: Hormuz is a chokepoint for global energy flows. Elevated risk there can flow through to oil prices, freight rates, and any asset tied to shipping or fuel costs.

How to Tell an Asset From a Liability: The One Question to Ask Before You Buy Anything
  • The typical American household earned more in 2025 than in any year on record, yet only 30% of Americans say they could pay a surprise $1,000 bill from savings, so the problem isn't income but what the income gets spent on.
  • An asset puts money in your pocket and a liability takes money out, and the wealthy buy assets first, then let the assets pay for the fun stuff.
  • Before you buy anything, ask one question: does this put money in my pocket, or take money out of my pocket? Then you need a plan for the money you keep.
