Why this funding landed now
Security teams are scrambling to shield companies from swarms of rogue AI agents, and that urgency is lifting vendors with fresh ideas. Island said Thursday it closed a $400 million raise that puts its valuation at $6.4 billion, led by Evolution Equity Partners. In an exclusive interview with CNBC, CEO and co-founder Mike Fey said, "Every old control is breaking, so everything's up for grabs," and added, "I've never seen anything like it. It's a very special time."
The backdrop: policymakers in Washington and Silicon Valley are tussling over how to regulate AI, with lawmakers from both parties even weighing whether development should slow down. Meanwhile, companies are bolstering defenses after attention-grabbing incidents like OpenAI's agent-orchestrated attack on Hugging Face.
What Island sells and who buys it
Island is best known for its enterprise browser, a tool that gives employers visibility into and control over browser activity as teams work together. Browsers have become a popular pathway for attackers hunting sensitive data, a trend amplified by hybrid work.
Its clients include major banks as well as Pfizer, Chipotle and American Airlines. This year, it holds the No. 28 spot on the CNBC Disruptor 50 list. Fey framed the mission this way: "What we're focused on is enabling everything required for safe, secure, and productive capabilities for the future workforce."

The road ahead and the competitive crowd
The company plans to pour funding into research and development and to push into new regions across Europe, Asia and the Middle East. Hiring is also on the docket, with headcount targeted to increase from 1,000 to 1,500 by the middle of next year.
Competition is getting thicker. Island faces established security players like Palo Alto Networks along with a pack of startups all chasing the fast growing AI security market. That mix is making tech stacks more complex and forcing companies to rethink their architecture, Fey said. Island's pitch is a wide platform with startup speed to boost productivity while trimming the number of tools teams juggle.
