Anthropic says adjusted operating profit is coming this quarter as IPO prep accelerates

Summary:
  • Per the Financial Times, Anthropic PBC, in remarks to a limited set of shareholders, said it expects to post an adjusted operating profit this quarter, indicating a second consecutive profitable stretch on that metric.
  • Bloomberg reported the company picked the Nasdaq for its listing and is aiming for an IPO that matches or tops SpaceX's record $86.3 billion deal earlier this year.
  • Bloomberg also reported Anthropic was set to complete a $15 billion revolving credit line this month and is on track for annualized revenue exceeding $65 billion, more than seven times the rate it was running at late last year.

What the company told investors

According to the Financial Times, Anthropic informed a small set of shareholders that it expects to show an adjusted operating profit this quarter. That adjusted metric removes certain exceptional or one-time items, and that update would represent the second straight profitable quarter on that basis while the AI company readies an IPO.

Margins, revenues and financing

The Financial Times reported that, before accounting for revenue sharing with partners such as Amazon.com Inc. and the costs to train its models, Anthropic's gross margins are above 80%, citing people familiar. Separately, Bloomberg has reported the company is trending toward annualized revenue above $65 billion given how it is performing now, up more than sevenfold versus its rate late last year. Bloomberg also said that, per its reporting, the company aimed to wrap up a $15 billion revolving credit facility before the month was over.

IPO plans and the AI backdrop

Bloomberg reported that Anthropic is preparing an IPO designed to match or exceed SpaceX's $86.3 billion listing earlier this year, and, according to a person familiar, that Nasdaq would be the exchange it selected. Across the sector, AI companies have been racing to secure capital through equity, debt and listings to fund heavy spending tied to surging compute demand, even as the boom has helped lift stocks. At the same time, concerns about fast-advancing AI have pushed industry leaders to urge guardrails.

On Saturday, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei joined OpenAI's Sam Altman and SpaceX's Elon Musk in calling to slow the pace of AI model development, citing rising risks. Altman also told Fortune that, because of safety concerns, his company will not pursue going public this year.

What this means for your portfolio

For anyone parsing the AI trade, here are the key takeaways: Anthropic is showing progress toward profitability on an adjusted basis, it is running with very high gross margins before partner and training costs, it is lining up sizable financing, and it has a bold IPO plan. Together, that paints a picture of heavy investment needs paired with rapid revenue growth and rising scrutiny over AI's pace. Translate that how you will, but the mix of scale, spending and safety debate is likely to shape how AI winners and losers get priced from here.

How Is the Economy Doing? Washington Says It's Fixed, but the Numbers Don't Agree
  • Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent says the economy is fixed because lower earners' incomes are now rising faster than top earners'.
  • The Atlanta Fed and Bank of America show different numbers, and Hilton, Marriott, and McDonald's can't agree on what they're seeing either.

US National Debt Hits $40 Trillion: Why the Economy Hasn't Collapsed Yet
  • The US national debt crossed $40 trillion in 2026 and is growing faster than the economy. The debt to GDP ratio now sits at 125%, the highest outside the pandemic and higher than World War II.

Your 401k Is Fueling the AI Bubble
  • About $10 trillion of 401k money sits in a $77 trillion stock market, mostly through target date funds and S&P 500 funds. Roughly 30% of every S&P 500 dollar lands in five AI-heavy tech stocks.
  • Four bubble signals run hotter today than before the 2000 crash: top-ten concentration, tech's share of the index, the Buffett Indicator, and how much of the market index funds own.
  • You only lock in an AI bubble loss if you sell. The 2022, 2020, 2008, and 2000 crashes were all buying windows for long-term investors, and the US-China AI race means government money could keep flowing in.

What Is Wealth Preservation? How To Protect Your Money From Anything

Why Is Everything So Expensive? Why Prices May Never Come Back Down
  • Official inflation is 3.4% and prices are up 32% since 2020, but rent (41%), gas (47%), car insurance (64%) and ground beef (79%) all outran the 28% median wage.
  • The Federal Reserve targets 2% inflation on purpose. Rising prices push extra dollars to investors and shrink the real cost of a $40 trillion national debt.
  • Investors who simply owned the S&P 500 gained about 150% over the same six years, and the Fed's September 16 decision will show whether it protects the dollar or the economy first.
