Earnings Recovery
China's banking giants showed renewed strength in the first half of 2026 following prolonged challenges from real estate sector risks and tepid loan demand. Industrial & Commercial Bank of China, the country's top financial institution, achieved a 3.3% annual profit increase, with its interest spread declining minimally to 1.29%.
Other leading lenders outperformed, with Agricultural Bank posting a 4.9% earnings jump and Bank of China registering 5.1% growth. China Construction Bank and Bank of Communications reported 4.6% and 4% profit increases respectively, signaling broad-based improvement across the sector.
Margin Improvement
The industry recorded its first quarterly net interest margin expansion since 2022, climbing to 1.41% in Q2 from 1.40% the prior quarter. "Foreign-currency NIM rose 13 basis points year-over-year, providing strong support for the group's overall margin stabilization," said Zhang Hui, president of Bank of China, during an earnings call.
Reduced funding costs drove the turnaround as banks replaced matured high-cost deposits with cheaper liabilities. However, profitability metrics remain near multi-decade lows despite the modest recovery.
Ongoing Challenges
Credit risks persist despite the earnings rebound, particularly in real estate and household debt segments. While ICBC's bad loan ratio edged down to 1.29%, Bank of Communications saw its ratio worsen to 1.30%. The sector's total non-performing loans stood at 3.7 trillion yuan by mid-2026, with an overall NPL ratio of 1.52%.

Reflecting improved cash positions, major institutions boosted interim dividends - ICBC increased its payout ratio to 31% from 30% previously.
Economic Context
The banking sector's performance reflects China's gradual economic stabilization after years of pandemic disruptions and property market corrections. As the world's second-largest economy transitions toward consumption-driven growth, lenders are adapting to changing credit patterns while managing legacy exposures to troubled developers. The margin improvement suggests monetary policy adjustments are gradually feeding through to bank balance sheets.
Outlook
While dividend hikes and stabilizing margins indicate financial resilience, the sector's recovery remains fragile due to substantial real estate exposures. Future profitability will hinge on macroeconomic trends and the pace of credit demand recovery across key industries.
