China Moves To Curb Exports Of Key Solar Technologies

Published Oct 16, 2026
Share:
Summary:
  • China will place export controls on 12 solar technologies and core equipment, the Commerce Ministry said Friday, citing national security and interests.
  • The measures prohibit sending abroad the manufacturing know-how for perovskite and tandem solar modules, and also tighten limits on certain polysilicon-making techniques.
  • The move is part of a broader revision spanning 40 key technologies, including artificial intelligence and biopharmaceuticals, with Beijing saying it consulted industry and the measures cover only a small set of items.

What Beijing announced

China's Commerce Ministry said it is adding a dozen solar related technologies and key equipment to its export control list to protect national security and interests. The update sits inside a larger overhaul that touches 40 priority technologies, including areas tied to artificial intelligence and biopharma. Officials also said the changes followed talks with industry and apply to a relatively small number of technologies.

Which solar tech is restricted

Beijing's new rules block the export of production know how for perovskite and for tandem solar modules. The emerging technology delivers higher efficiency and can be used for space based solar. On top of that, certain technologies used to produce polysilicon, a crucial solar raw material, will face export restrictions.

Why China says it matters

"In recent years, the application of solar technology in sensitive fields such as aerospace, national defense, unmanned equipment, and high-security-level infrastructure has been continuously expanding," the ministry said. "The national security risks that may be caused by the export of solar technology have been constantly rising. It is necessary to implement timely and appropriate supervision." Beijing also said it will continue to back cross-border collaboration and knowledge-sharing in climate-friendly technologies.

The global backdrop and investor angle

The timing coincides with pushes in the US and India to expand domestic solar factories and reduce reliance on Chinese vendors, who still control a large share of the world's photovoltaic supply chain. Even so, BloombergNEF notes that companies there still depend on China for certain critical materials, equipment, and technologies. In plain English: investors tracking solar hardware and inputs now have one more policy variable to monitor as supply chains evolve.

Common Investing Mistakes: Why a Stock Grade Is One Tool, Not the Whole Toolkit
  • The Briefs Score shows growth, income, and wealth preservation investors how well a stock fits their goal, with a separate letter grade for each one.
  • The most common mistake is treating the letter as an instruction. An A tells you a stock scores well for one goal, not that you should buy today.
  • Research works best as one input in a process you own. The grade shows how a stock stacks up. You supply the goal, the timeline, and the rules for being wrong.

How to Tell an Asset From a Liability: The One Question to Ask Before You Buy Anything
  • The typical American household earned more in 2025 than in any year on record, yet only 30% of Americans say they could pay a surprise $1,000 bill from savings, so the problem isn't income but what the income gets spent on.
  • An asset puts money in your pocket and a liability takes money out, and the wealthy buy assets first, then let the assets pay for the fun stuff.
  • Before you buy anything, ask one question: does this put money in my pocket, or take money out of my pocket? Then you need a plan for the money you keep.
