What changed at the pump
Relief is arriving in two forms. Eni said Friday it will cap diesel at €2.19 and unleaded at €1.99 per liter, which is roughly 17 cents under current averages. Separately, Socar plans to lower prices across its Italian service-station network, a step Italy's foreign minister said will apply nationwide. Socar also completed the acquisition of fuel retailer Italiana Petroli this year.
The politics behind it
Voluntary price moves from energy majors take some of the urgency out of a windfall tax push inside Premier Giorgia Meloni's coalition. Her bloc includes Brothers of Italy, Forza Italia and the League, and they have not seen eye to eye on extra levies. With Italy's fiscal space still tight, company-led cuts or caps sidestep the political math of squeezing businesses in what is likely to be Meloni's last budget before a general election expected next year.
Who pushed it over the line
Tajani said he asked Rovshan Najaf to act earlier this month, adding the decision will cover the whole country.

What it means for your wallet
To bolster consumption, Italy began cutting fuel taxes in March, shortly following the start of the US-led war in Iran, and the diesel tax relief is scheduled to lapse next month. With companies now stepping in on price, the near term pain at the pump could ease a bit and leave more room in monthly budgets. That can matter for everything from grocery runs to how much you set aside.
