The fission crowd looks set to notch a real project. TVA says the NRC is expected to sign off Tuesday on a construction permit for a 300-megawatt small reactor at its Clinch River property in Tennessee, just west of Knoxville. It would be a tangible step for an industry that talks a lot about cheaper, quicker builds and is hungry for examples you can point to on a map.
TVA is weighing up to four BWRX-300 units from GE Vernova Hitachi Nuclear Energy, and this permit would apply only to the initial system. That lines up with reporting from Bloomberg News last week. GE Vernova Hitachi is among dozens pushing compact nuclear designs meant to be made in factories and assembled on site to cut costs and construction time.
The factory-first model is still largely unproven. At present, there are only two such smaller reactors being built in countries other than China or Russia. In the U.S., this would be just the second permit to construct a small modular commercial reactor, coming after TerraPower LLC won approval in March for a project located in Wyoming. In Canada, Ontario Power Generation began building the world's first BWRX-300 system last year.
