Clean Energy Framed as Competitiveness
California Governor Gavin Newsom and Illinois Governor JB Pritzker used a New York City forum to make a dollars-and-sense case for clean energy, saying it connects directly to affordability, growth and the United States' ability to compete. The gathering was put together by the climate coalition America Is All In during Climate Week NYC.
Both are widely talked about for 2028 and leaned on home state results to make the point.
California's Battery Buildout and Global Race
Newsom made batteries the headline, saying storage capacity has jumped from roughly 770 megawatts in 2019 to over 21,000 megawatts today. "The economy is built on batteries," he said.

Taking aim at President Donald Trump, he said Trump tried to "vandalize progress in this country" and "recreate the 19th century" by dragging out the clean-energy transition and steering policy toward oil, gas and coal. He added that China "is cleaning our clock" on green supply chains, casting it as a straight-up competition challenge.
Illinois's Power Mix and Water Advantage
Pritzker said Illinois has about tripled its share of renewables since he took office in 2019 and that his administration kept two nuclear plants from closing. He contrasted New York's state moratorium on data center development with what he sees as a smarter model for Illinois: require operators to add clean electricity to the grid so households are not stuck with higher power bills and to install closed-loop systems so facilities use less water.
He argued the Midwest has a real edge on water. "Preserving our freshwater supremacy is hugely important" for the economic future of Illinois and the Great Lakes region, he said. "When you look where the population is moving in the next 30 years, they will be moving to the Midwest due to abundant fresh water."
What It Means for Your Portfolio
Policy is pointing capital. California's storage surge and Illinois's combination of faster renewables growth, continued nuclear capacity and Pritzker's push for data centers to add clean power and use closed-loop cooling show where permits and public priorities may steer projects next. The focus is squarely on storage, grid additions and water-sparing tech, all tied to keeping bills in check and staying competitive.
