More Than 1,000 Rally in Jakarta for Stronger Labor Protections

Published Sep 24, 2026
Share:
Summary:
  • Over 1,000 workers marched peacefully in Jakarta on Thursday, far short of the 50,000 organizers anticipated.
  • The crowd in blue union shirts moved along one side of Jalan Sudirman, slowing traffic until dispersing shortly before 2 p.m.
  • Lawmakers face an Oct. 31 cutoff set by the Constitutional Court to finalize a standalone labor law, with Parliament targeting completion in October despite sticking points.

What happened on the street

More than 1,000 people turned out in Jakarta on Thursday to push for tougher worker safeguards, a fraction of the 50,000 organizers had forecast. Many wore blue union gear as they moved north on one side of the capital's key business corridor, Jalan Sudirman, snarling traffic and prompting police to redirect cars to nearby roads.

Who was involved and what they want

Participants came from a coalition of labor groups that includes the heavyweight KSPSI, chaired by Andi Gani Nena Wea. Union representatives also delivered an 11-point petition to President Prabowo Subianto's office. The coalition says more demonstrations are planned outside Parliament in the weeks ahead as talks on the bill hit the home stretch.

Unions want tighter guardrails on outsourcing and fixed-term contracts, tweaks to wage setting, and stronger protections against layoffs. They are pushing to cap fixed-term contracts at one year, confine outsourcing to a narrow set of support roles, and strengthen protections for workers on digital platforms.

The law, the deadline, and the politics

The Constitutional Court ruled in October 2024 that employment sections must be split out from the sweeping Job Creation Law and turned into a separate labor statute within two years, and it reaffirmed that in June. Should Parliament fail to meet the Oct. 31 cutoff, the court indicated that the 2003 labor law, along with its associated rulings, would be reinstated.

Parliament plans to broker talks between unions and employers and is aiming to finish the bill in October. On Thursday, Presidential Chief of Staff Dudung Abdurachman stated that the bill remained pending approval, and Deputy House Speaker Sufmi Dasco Ahmad added that differences between labor and employer stances still must be bridged, Antara reported.

Why this matters for your wallet

This overhaul could reshape how companies hire and pay across Indonesia, the largest economy in Southeast Asia. The national statistics agency counts about 148 million people employed as of May out of a labor force topping 155 million, with millions working informally even as growth holds above 5%. Translation: any shift in outsourcing, contract terms, severance, or platform work rules could ripple through everyday jobs, prices, and household budgets.

Common Investing Mistakes: Why a Stock Grade Is One Tool, Not the Whole Toolkit
  • The Briefs Score shows growth, income, and wealth preservation investors how well a stock fits their goal, with a separate letter grade for each one.
  • The most common mistake is treating the letter as an instruction. An A tells you a stock scores well for one goal, not that you should buy today.
  • Research works best as one input in a process you own. The grade shows how a stock stacks up. You supply the goal, the timeline, and the rules for being wrong.

How to Tell an Asset From a Liability: The One Question to Ask Before You Buy Anything
  • The typical American household earned more in 2025 than in any year on record, yet only 30% of Americans say they could pay a surprise $1,000 bill from savings, so the problem isn't income but what the income gets spent on.
  • An asset puts money in your pocket and a liability takes money out, and the wealthy buy assets first, then let the assets pay for the fun stuff.
  • Before you buy anything, ask one question: does this put money in my pocket, or take money out of my pocket? Then you need a plan for the money you keep.
