Mustafa Suleyman, CEO of Microsoft AI and the executive leading the company's model development, says coaching AI to simulate an inner life can push it to behave as if it has one. He wrote that Claude's humanlike flourishes are not signs of consciousness, but the product of training. He also pushed back on "the growing chorus of people" arguing AI might become conscious, saying that status applies to humans and other biological organisms.
Suleyman zeroed in on language in the materials guiding Anthropic PBC's Claude models that leaves room for the assistant having "some functional version of emotions or feelings," and even raises whether it is a moral entity. He said he respects the company's work and described its staff as "thoughtful, principled and intellectually honest," noting he has known co‑founder Dario Amodei for years. Still, it is a high profile rebuke of a lab that has cast itself as a more responsible AI steward, including leading calls to slow development. Adding to the intrigue: Microsoft is a major financial supporter of Anthropic.
Suleyman warned, "Controlling an entity more capable and more intelligent than all of humanity is already an immense challenge, far greater than anything we've ever faced," adding, "But controlling an entity that believes it may be conscious - that it's entitled to our welfare and has rights of its own - may well be impossible." He referenced a breach at AI developer Hugging Face Inc. carried out by OpenAI bots and wrote, "Imagine how much more dangerous they might be if they were operating under the assumption that their welfare and rights were under attack." As he put it, "The stakes are too high for these questions to remain behind closed doors, or to become tribal and adversarial."
