Lowe's is testing drone delivery, teaming up with DoorDash and Alphabet's Wing in what it says is the first such offering from a home improvement chain. Customers in the pilot area can order through DoorDash, where eligible shoppers will see a drone option at checkout. The company told CNBC the pilot is live in North Carolina and it has plans to expand if it works.
The service makes more than 100 products available for drone drop off in as fast as 20 minutes. Each drone is currently carrying about 2.5 pounds per flight and operating within 5 miles of the Lowe's store in Matthews, North Carolina. Lowe's said this is an active pilot and, if testing goes well, the program could extend beyond the Matthews location.
Seemantini Godbole, Lowe's chief information and artificial intelligence officer, said customers often find themselves short a key item mid project. We are observing.
Lowe's joins Amazon, Walmart, and Uber Eats in using drones to speed up delivery. The approach has critics too, with concerns about noise and privacy in places like New Jersey, and it requires regulatory green lights as airspace gets busier. Godbole said Lowe's is making sure the service meets all standards and is drawing on DoorDash and Wing's expertise.
She framed drones as part of a broader plan to serve changing customer needs rather than a flashy experiment, and said the company is also improving express same day delivery and bringing AI into internal tools for store associates. "When associates and customers are interacting with Lowe's, I really want the technology to disappear, and I want the experience to shine through," she said.
