What Happened
Alabama's lawsuit was headed to a jury on Monday, but the state announced a settlement on Friday that short-circuits what would have been the first trial among a cluster of state actions targeting TikTok. TikTok did not provide a comment right away when asked.
The Terms And Context
Under the deal, TikTok will pay up to $300 million and roll out safeguards: teens get a daily cap of two hours, prompts break up prolonged scrolling, access is blocked during school hours, and there are limits overnight. Some of those features must be live within a week, according to Katherine Robertson, the state's chief counsel. She added, "We knew what we were after and were fully prepared to go to trial," and, "They came to the table at the eleventh hour with what we asked for." TikTok is not admitting liability or wrongdoing.
Robertson said Alabama will be paid $116 million inside 45 days, and the amount could increase if other states accept the same terms. The framework closely aligns with the protections Meta accepted about a month earlier, when it agreed it could pay up to $18 billion and implement safety changes to settle allegations brought by nearly all US states. "Meta absolutely shaped this agreement," Robertson said, after Meta publicly pushed TikTok, YouTube, and Snap to embrace similar safeguards.

Why It Matters For Your Portfolio
Two things to watch: first, the size and speed of these state settlements are turning content moderation into a real cost center for social apps. Second, when one giant sets a template, others tend to follow. If more states join Alabama's structure, platforms could standardize safety features quickly, which can influence user growth, engagement, and, eventually, ad dollars.
