Hiring Picked Up and Stayed Broad
U.S. private payrolls increased by 90,000 in September, per ADP, a clear rebound from August's downwardly revised 36,000 and ahead of the 68,000 economists expected. The gains were split across the economy, with service industries adding 59,000 jobs and goods producers contributing 31,000.
Education and health services led the way with 55,000 hires. Leisure and hospitality added 22,000, manufacturing posted 17,000, and construction improved by 15,000. A few areas contracted: financial activities shed 16,000 roles, professional and business services declined by 11,000, and natural resources and mining edged down by 1,000.
Regionally, the Northeast accounted for 56,000 of the new positions. By company size, mid-sized firms with 50 to 499 employees expanded headcount by 54,000.

Pay and the Policy Backdrop
Wages continued to firm, with base pay up 3.2% from a year earlier and gross pay up 4.7%. "It's a strong report," said ADP chief economist Nela Richardson. "After a three-month slowdown, job creation rebounded and pay growth remained solid."
Recent remarks by several Federal Reserve officials suggest the labor market remains broadly healthy after a 2025 growth scare, and these figures are consistent with that view. Seeing persistent inflation as the bigger risk, policymakers earlier in September implemented a quarter-percentage-point increase in benchmark borrowing rates.
