What spooked investors
A report from Japan's Diamond said Nidec intends to record an impairment of roughly ¥1 trillion, which the outlet pegged at $6.3 billion. The charge would be applied retroactively to the fiscal year that closed in March 2026. That headline alone was enough to knock the stock down 17%. Diamond did not disclose its sourcing for the details.
Leadership shake-up on deck
According to Diamond, directors voted last week to oust Chief Executive Officer Mitsuya Kishida. The outlet added that the company could roll out its leadership announcement as early as Tuesday. Bloomberg News said it could not reach a Nidec spokesperson for comment outside normal business hours.
How the scandal built up
Nidec, the largest precision motor producer globally, has been navigating turmoil since it revealed accounting problems last year that touched subsidiaries in Italy, Switzerland and China, plus its car inverter unit. Earlier this year, the turmoil led to a rupture between the company and Shigenobu Nagamori, the founder and former CEO. His hard-charging approach was cited for creating a relentless culture that many viewed as the underlying driver of widespread fraud.
