What happened
Disney is trimming roughly 300 jobs in a fresh wave of reductions, according to a person with direct insight into the decision. That individual requested anonymity because they were not cleared to speak publicly. Deadline broke the news of this round first.
How this fits into earlier moves
Back in April, Disney mapped out plans to shed up to 1,000 roles as CEO Josh D'Amaro combined the company's enterprise marketing group, as reported by CNBC at the time. Additional reductions landed in July, shrinking the headcount by several hundred across corporate teams, touching Pixar, ESPN, Disney Entertainment Television and Disney's studios. Most of that midyear pain fell on Pixar and National Geographic, according to multiple media accounts.
What Disney signaled and why it matters
In August, Disney told shareholders it remained "highly focused on reducing costs across the enterprise to create incremental capacity to invest for growth" and was "evaluating a variety of levers, including reductions in labor and SG&A." The company added, "We are mid-stream in this work and will provide future updates on progress." At roughly the same time, Disney rolled out buyout offers tied to early retirement for veteran executives.
