What changed
In a note to employees on Monday, Balyasny elevated Ilan Weiss to run equities with founder Dmitry Balyasny. "This promotion will allow him to focus 100% of his time and energy on the entire equities business," Dmitry wrote. A spokesperson declined to comment on the memo.

The internal case and team moves
Leadership pointed to Weiss's results, noting his team has led the firm's equity groups in profits from the time he took on the portfolio manager role. He already serves on the equity investment committee and co-runs Anthem, the internal curriculum that develops analysts into portfolio managers. He joined the firm through that program in 2022.
The memo also laid out more changes: Matt Jacobs was promoted to senior managing director of equities; Alberto Mann is set to join the equity investment committee; and Garrett Monasterio will step in as Weiss's successor as team head.
Balyasny oversees nearly 100 portfolio managers spread across three equity divisions. Equities represent about 35% of the firm's gross capital. The firm manages $37 billion across multiple strategies.
Performance backdrop and what it means for your portfolio
It has been a mixed year at the $37 billion multistrategy firm. The equities strategy has made money in 2024, according to a person familiar with performance, while the fixed income and macro effort has lost money. That same person said overall returns were 0.7% through September, trailing the firm's largest rivals. Three years ago, Dmitry Balyasny took direct oversight of equities investing with support from a committee of stock pickers; Weiss already serves on that committee, and this new role gives him a wider remit over the firm's biggest strategy.
Why you care: leadership shifts like this signal where a firm is leaning for results. If the stock-picking engine is the bright spot and now has more focused attention, that can influence how risk is balanced across strategies that touch your portfolio through multi-manager funds or pensions.
