What happened
With Brazil's polarized general elections landing Sunday, the US and Australia put consular services on hold, citing "security concerns." The US embassy told Americans needing emergency help not to go to any diplomatic facility and to call a duty officer instead. Australia's embassy advised its nationals to contact an emergency center in Canberra, and the two missions did not spell out the precise nature of the concerns.
All personnel at US diplomatic posts across Brazil were told to work remotely beginning Friday, said a person with knowledge of the move who lacked authorization to speak on the record.
What police are probing
Brazil's Federal Police said Friday it carried out two court-authorized searches in Sao Paulo and in an area in the vicinity of Brasilia while pursuing an inquiry into suspected plans for activities that might jeopardize US diplomatic facilities in the country. Investigators said they have not found proof supporting the initially identified threats, nor any ties between suspects and criminal organizations so far. The inquiry is continuing, including reviews of seized communication devices and other media.
What officials said and why it matters
Washington said it is working with Brazilian authorities "to address security issues." An embassy spokesperson, reached by Bloomberg News, declined to provide additional information, and Brazil's Foreign Ministry did not respond promptly when asked for comment. In a Portuguese-only statement, a State Department spokesperson noted that US embassies and consulates make routine use of an alert system "to inform US citizens about threats, events and relevant changes in local conditions."
