Vote details and raises
Two bargaining units represented by the Society of Professional Engineering Employees in Aerospace signed off on the agreement. Engineers in the professional unit backed it with 67.62% support, while the technical unit passed it with 53.48% in favor. The union represents about 13,000 Boeing engineers and roughly 4,000 technical workers.
What the deal gives workers
The contract delivers an immediate 10% pay bump. Over the four-year term, it includes 4% annual raises, with the chance for increases up to 6% based on merit. Employees had previously turned down a package that offered 3% yearly raises, leading Boeing to sweeten its proposal in mid-September. Boeing said it was "pleased with the outcome of the vote." The union was upbeat too, saying, "We secured many victories that some thought were completely out of reach when this negotiation cycle started."
Operational backdrop and context
With the vote complete, the near-term strike risk eases, letting Boeing focus on stabilizing and increasing output of its top sellers and on obtaining FAA certification of the 737 Max 10 and the 777X, both of which are years overdue. On Monday, the Federal Aviation Administration said it is evaluating a 737 Max 10 software matter to determine if it poses a safety of flight issue, including any implications for landing procedures under specific conditions. For context on labor risks, production was stopped two years ago when machinists went on strike, and it did not resume until an agreement was finalized.
