What opened and where
According to China's Ministry of Defense, China has established a new logistics hub together with a training complex at Laos's Ban Keun Airport, formally titled the China-Laos Military Joint Support and Training Center. It went into operation Tuesday and was unveiled together with the China-Laos Friendship Aviation Academy. The two governments will share maintenance of the facility.
Ban Keun is roughly 40 miles (64 kilometers) to the north of Vientiane. The area also encompasses Lima Site-44, a Cold War-era strip that the US employed for aviation and logistics, and it was not immediately clear whether the new center occupies that old site.
The official pitch
China's Ministry of Defense described the initiatives as rooted in partnership, stating, "Their construction and use are the result of mutual respect and equal consultation between China and Laos." The ministry added, "They are not directed against any third party and are conducive to further strengthening practical cooperation between the two militaries."
The broader arc
The opening adds to the People's Liberation Army's still small but expanding footprint abroad as China grows more capable of operating beyond its borders. Beijing established its first official overseas base in Djibouti in 2017, followed by the China-Cambodia Joint Support and Training Center at Cambodia's Port Ream in 2025. Both have triggered worries in Washington and other Western capitals regarding China's global military reach. In Laos, ties have been close since the 1990s, helped by shared political alignment, and a rail link China launched in 2021 has supported the local economy and strengthened connectivity.
