The Federal Aviation Administration is putting the 737 Max 10's signoff on hold after a fresh software concern surfaced. Administrator Bryan Bedford said on Monday the agency will wait to decide whether the problem amounts to a safety of flight issue, speaking with reporters at an event near Washington. Boeing, for its part, said it is continuing to follow the FAA's lead as the certification work continues.
The software issue and FAA response
Bedford explained that the newest software, which the agency approved for the smaller 737 Max 7, addressed a known vertical navigation issue but inadvertently created another, smaller bug. "The pilots remain in control of the airplane. They train for these scenarios," he told reporters. "The issue that we're looking at right now is the workload component under these more obscure situations and how we feel about that." He added, "We haven't concluded whether this is a safety of flight issue or not," and, "But we will be delaying the 10 until we're satisfied we don't have an issue here."
After Bedford's remarks, the FAA said, "Safety dictates the certification timeline," and, "We're following our safety review process to investigate this software glitch and won't hesitate to take action if needed."

Why this matters for Boeing and your wallet
The Max 10 had been on track for approval in the coming weeks. Clearing that milestone is pivotal for Boeing to generate more cash and shore up its balance sheet after years of turbulence. It also factors into Boeing's push to chip away at Airbus's dominant position in single-aisle jets.
The backlog is sizable, with more than 1,500 Max 10s on order. After the delay news, Boeing shares slid 6.9% to $184.39, the lowest close since Nov. 2025.
