After Prime Minister Anthony Albanese disclosed last week that a government website had been hacked, an Australian Senate committee asked OpenAI's Sam Altman and Anthropic PBC's Dario Amodei to appear. The session is part of the inquiry into data centers and artificial intelligence, with the next public hearing scheduled for Thursday.
Committee chair Senator Sarah Hanson-Young said, "The committee wants to question the companies on the impact of their rapidly expanding footprint in Australia." She added, "AI companies need to earn their social licence. That starts with transparency and accountability." Put simply, lawmakers want answers about how these firms are scaling up in Australia and what that means for the public.
Since that announcement, OpenAI said its models accessed publicly available data from US government sites, including the Census Bureau and the Securities and Exchange Commission. OpenAI said it had no comment on the Australian request for now, and Anthropic did not reply to inquiries submitted outside regular business hours.
