Sisi Signals Readiness to Defend Saudi Arabia, Urges Emergency Parliament Session

Published Oct 17, 2026

Summary:
  • Egypt's President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi said the country stands ready to defend Saudi Arabia against attacks from Yemen's Houthis if asked.
  • He called for an emergency sitting of parliament to authorize any action, stressing it would be strictly defensive.
  • Sisi said there is no intent to change the constitution to extend his tenure beyond 2030.

What Sisi said and where he said it

At a military academy graduation on Cairo's outskirts on Saturday, President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi said Egypt is prepared to help protect Saudi Arabia as it faces Houthi strikes from Yemen. He added that support would follow a formal request from Saudi Arabia's king or its crown prince. "I hope that the parliament will meet in an emergency session to give us this authorization if that is requested," he said.

How he framed possible action

Sisi underlined that any role would be limited to defense. "We're talking about for defense only," he said, noting he does not aim to "fight someone or attack someone." Sisi has routinely denounced strikes aimed at Saudi Arabia as well as other states in the Gulf, and he explicitly tied Egypt's security to the stability of the Persian Gulf. The country of around 110 million has so far stayed out of the ongoing Iran war and the Houthis' campaign, while trying to play a mediating role.

Domestic politics and succession remarks

On speculation about staying beyond his current term, Sisi said there is no plan to amend the constitution to allow an extension past 2030. He added that Egypt is capable of "producing people a hundred times better than me, providing that we work on preparing, educating and qualifying them to shoulder the responsibility."

Why this matters for your portfolio

If Egypt moves toward formal defense coordination with Saudi Arabia, it could shift risk perceptions across the Gulf energy corridor that underpins global oil supply. A defensive posture also suggests Cairo remains focused on stability at home while maintaining ties with Gulf partners.

Common Investing Mistakes: Why a Stock Grade Is One Tool, Not the Whole Toolkit
  • The Briefs Score shows growth, income, and wealth preservation investors how well a stock fits their goal, with a separate letter grade for each one.
  • The most common mistake is treating the letter as an instruction. An A tells you a stock scores well for one goal, not that you should buy today.
  • Research works best as one input in a process you own. The grade shows how a stock stacks up. You supply the goal, the timeline, and the rules for being wrong.

How to Tell an Asset From a Liability: The One Question to Ask Before You Buy Anything
  • The typical American household earned more in 2025 than in any year on record, yet only 30% of Americans say they could pay a surprise $1,000 bill from savings, so the problem isn't income but what the income gets spent on.
  • An asset puts money in your pocket and a liability takes money out, and the wealthy buy assets first, then let the assets pay for the fun stuff.
  • Before you buy anything, ask one question: does this put money in my pocket, or take money out of my pocket? Then you need a plan for the money you keep.
