What NBIM says it will do
Norges Bank Investment Management, which holds stakes in more than 7,000 listed companies, plans to step up engagement with market participants to safeguard strong shareholder protections. Officials led by outgoing governance chief Carine Smith Ihenacho said they intend to "engage proactively" to maintain and strengthen these rights where the fund invests. It also plans to vote "consistently to promote adequate protection of our rights" and collaborate with academics to deepen the broader understanding of how shareholder rights support effective markets.
Scale and recent flashpoints
The fund votes on roughly 110,000 resolutions across more than 11,000 annual shareholder meetings each year, following its voting guidelines. Earlier this year, it took the unusual step of supporting all shareholder proposals at Palantir Technologies Inc., backing motions focused on impact assessment and human rights due diligence, and on reporting political contributions.
