What BBVA is building
BBVA, formally Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria, aims to add a Miami office focused on investment and corporate banking. The bank is in the process of seeking the required regulatory approvals, according to people who asked not to be named because the plan is private.
How it fits with BBVA's US footprint
After selling its US consumer banking operations in 2020, BBVA has concentrated on private banking from Miami for South American customers. On the dealmaking side, it already runs investment banking from its New York and Houston locations. The global investment banking unit is led by Javier Rodriguez Soler.
The numbers behind the push
BBVA's global investment banking business delivered an 18% jump in first half net income to €2 billion. A spokeswoman for the lender said it would not comment on the Miami plans.
