What changed and how markets reacted
Carrefour warned that ongoing social unrest in France is shaking consumer confidence and keeping customers away, and that this will weigh on its results for the year. That update sent shares down hard.
Over five sessions the shares dropped 17%, erasing in excess of €2 billion ($2.2 billion) of market capitalization. Wednesday delivered the biggest single-day drop on record. If the slide sticks, it would be the sharpest weekly decline since October 2008.
What the company and analysts are saying
Speaking to analysts, Chief Executive Officer Alexandre Bompard said roughly 50 Carrefour sites were targeted on day one of the looting. Management put the maximum possible profitability hit at roughly €200 million.
Carrefour was the first retailer to detail the riot-related damage, and it is likely among the most vulnerable because many stores sit in city centers and suburbs in Paris as well as other municipalities. Meanwhile, other French companies reporting this week said it is too early to quantify the fallout.

In an email, Morningstar Inc. analyst Verushka Shetty said, "We view the guidance cut as cautious, but appropriate." Kepler Cheuvreux's Francois Digard cut the stock to hold from buy, writing that the group "gives the impression of entering the Valley of the Shadow of Death" and asking, "Unfortunately, who wants to invest in France under such circumstances?" Morgan Stanley, CIC Market Solutions and UBS Group AG also downgraded. Per Bloomberg, the consensus is now five buys, 11 holds and two sells, and earnings estimates have been reduced.
The bigger picture for investors
The warning snapped what had been a strong run. Through the end of last week, Carrefour shares were up 17% in 2026, putting them on pace for their best year since 2013. The bottom line: near-term expectations have reset lower as the unrest hits demand, and your portfolio's outcome here likely hinges on how long confidence and store traffic stay under pressure.
