A Record Setter With Miami Front and Center
Ken Griffin is committing $3 billion to Carnegie Mellon University, and $2 billion of that is earmarked to launch a Miami campus. Bloomberg pegs his net worth at $57.5 billion. Griffin will also join Carnegie Mellon's board of trustees.
"The opportunity to bring Carnegie Mellon to Miami places our city at the heart of humanistic and scientific advancement and amplifies the University's international reach and impact," Griffin said in a release. "CMU Miami will cultivate the talent, knowledge, and expertise to launch new enterprises, contribute to Miami's economy and community, and advance the prosperity of our nation."
What CMU Miami Plans To Build
The Miami campus is slated for a 35-acre parcel in Wynwood, an area famed for its art scene. Groundbreaking is targeted for 2027, and the university expects to welcome its first students in 2028. Once fully built out, CMU projects the campus will support more than 3,500 students.
Rather than conventional majors, the curriculum will be organized around addressing major societal challenges, including climate resilience and national security.

Griffin's Miami Push Has Been Building
After relocating Citadel's headquarters to Miami in 2022 due to concerns about crime in Chicago, he emerged as a champion for the city, citing Florida's pro-business environment, its low tax burden, and the overall quality of life. They're hopeful about the future."
Griffin has also sharply criticized the leadership of elite universities, including his own alma mater.
