Trump Vows Hard Response After Iran Says It Attacked Two U.S. Bases in Jordan

Summary:
  • Following Iran's claim that it had struck two U.S. bases in Jordan, President Donald Trump told Fox News' Trey Yingst, "There will be a response," and added, "We're going to hit them very hard."
  • U.S. Central Command said U.S. troops carried out strikes against a pair of Iranian launchers located on Larak Island after spotting Guard personnel readying rockets equipped with sea mines for use in the Strait of Hormuz.
  • The flare-up coincided with seven-year Pentagon deals with General Dynamics and Lockheed Martin to boost output and accelerate delivery of "critical subcomponents" for THAAD and PAC-3 MSE missile-defense systems.

What happened, in plain terms

On Monday morning, President Donald Trump called Fox News correspondent Trey Yingst and, according to Yingst, said, "There will be a response," adding, "We're going to hit them very hard," following Iran's assertion that it had carried out strikes on two U.S. bases in Jordan. Trump additionally told Fox that U.S. air defenses knocked down all but one missile fired by Iran's Revolutionary Guard at the bases, and that the lone missile allowed through was assessed as not threatening any significant target.

Iranian media said the Guard reported that a U.S. action on Larak Island left several Iranian soldiers dead and injured. The Guard said it answered with missile and drone strikes on Jordan's King Hussein and Al Azraq bases, claiming the strikes "destroyed the technical and repair infrastructure, as well as the enemy fighter deployment sites," inflicted "heavy damage," and warning that future responses would escalate. The latest hostilities marked the first time in over a month that the United States and Iran have exchanged strikes.

The military moves and the Strait of Hormuz

U.S. Central Command said that on Sunday U.S. forces struck two Iranian rocket launchers positioned on Larak Island after observing Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps personnel preparing to fire rockets loaded with sea mines toward the Strait of Hormuz. "Earlier today U.S. forces struck two Iranian launchers on Larak Island. Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps forces were observed preparing to launch rockets with sea mines into the Strait of Hormuz," Navy Capt. Tim Hawkins said in a statement provided to MS NOW. He added, "Last week, CENTCOM completed clearing sea mines from the strait's international shipping routes. U.S. forces are monitoring the area closely and remain prepared to protect the free flow of commerce through this essential waterway."

Larak - an Iranian islet in the Strait of Hormuz - serves as a strategic hub for Tehran's military oversight of shipping traffic along one of the world's most vital maritime corridors. Sunday's strike was the first U.S. attack on Iranian positions publicly acknowledged since late July.

A senior Iranian source told Reuters that for every American strike on Iran, Tehran will respond "dozens of times greater," and warned, "No target in the region is beyond Tehran's reach." The source further cautioned that ships violating Tehran's transit regulations will face deteriorating conditions in the Strait of Hormuz.

Markets, munitions, and what it means for your portfolio

Six months into the war, traffic through the Strait of Hormuz has been sharply disrupted. The latest escalation lifted oil above $90 as traders reassessed supply risks: As of Monday morning, Brent crude for November gained 3.2% to $90.90 per barrel, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate for October rose 3.5% to $86.28.

The Defense Department on Monday announced seven-year procurement agreements with General Dynamics and Lockheed Martin aimed at increasing production and speeding delivery of "critical subcomponents" for ballistic missile intercept systems, specifically Terminal High Altitude Area Defense and Patriot Advanced Capability-3 Missile Segment Enhancement. The Washington Post reported that the war has drained U.S. stocks of THAAD interceptors and long-range Tomahawk missiles, while noting that the Trump administration continues to dispute reports of munitions shortages.

America Is Running Out of Debt Buyers. Treasury Bills Are the Government's Fix
  • The government took in about $5 trillion in taxes in 2025 and spent about $7 trillion, and the national debt is now over $40 trillion.
  • Investors, banks, and foreign countries are all lending less to the U.S., so starting September 9 the government plans to sell more short-term treasury bills and use that cash to buy back its long-term debt.
  • Government interest rates set the floor for your mortgage, your car loan, and your credit card, and short-term Treasury ETFs like SGOV are one way investors are playing it.

No Tax on Overtime: How Overtime Pay Is Taxed
  • "No tax on overtime" refers to a tax break that lets certain workers deduct some overtime pay, lowering the income they get taxed on.
  • A deduction does not mean overtime is truly tax-free. It means part of that pay is subtracted before your tax is figured.

Reading the Silver Price Forecast for 2026
