Waze is a navigation app owned by Google, but it still has to fight for users against big rivals such as Apple Maps. To stay competitive, Waze is packing in new artificial intelligence tools and a mode for motorcyclists.
Waze has long relied on its community of drivers to report traffic jams, police presence, and road hazards in real time. By layering Gemini's AI on top of that crowdsourced data, the app can now anticipate what a driver values - speed, scenery, or simplicity - without requiring manual settings each time. This blend of human input and machine learning is a natural evolution for a platform that pioneered user-generated traffic alerts.
The bigger picture: Google is pushing its Gemini assistant into more of its products. Waze is the latest example of that strategy in action. This integration builds on Waze's long-standing strength in crowd-sourced traffic data, now layered with AI to anticipate driver preferences without manual input.
AI-Powered Upgrades
Waze is adding a feature that learns your driving habits and suggests routes tailored to you. It uses Google's Gemini AI to understand your preferences and offer faster or more scenic paths without you needing to ask.

Additionally, a Gemini-driven conversational search feature is being introduced, available initially to Waze's beta testers worldwide on both Android and iOS. Instead of typing in an address, you can say something like "Find a gas station near the airport" and the app understands the request and pulls up a list of options.
Waze is also letting users update maps by voice. You can report a road closure or an outdated address just by speaking. Waze also offers a "less chatty" option that reduces the frequency and length of voice prompts, though it still gives alerts for hazards and turns.
By integrating Gemini, Waze is not only improving convenience but also aligning with Google's strategy to embed AI across its product suite. This move could help Waze retain its user base against competitors like Apple Maps, which has been adding features such as real-time transit and cycling directions. The new conversational search and personalized route suggestions represent a significant step toward a more intuitive navigation experience.
Motorcycle Mode and Global Rollout
A fresh Motorcycle mode is being launched by Waze, leveraging AI to consider motorcycle-only shortcuts and road limitations, enabling riders to get optimal routes and improved arrival time estimates. The mode additionally displays obstacles that are particularly challenging for two-wheelers, such as potholes, speed bumps, elevated crosswalks, shoulders that drop off, and narrow bridges.
This initial rollout covers both Android and iOS.
