Wind's bigger role this year
September's wind output reached 6.62 terawatt-hours, setting a new mark for the month and topping last year by 4%. That single-month record sits inside a broader upswing: over the first nine months, wind generation ran 14% above its prior high, and total renewable output was roughly 15% above its previous record, according to NESO data. The surge helped push gas-fired generation to its lowest September level on record.
Why gas still sets the price
The UK prices power under a marginal system, where the highest cost plant required to satisfy demand sets the going rate in that interval. So even with less gas on the grid, it still calls the tune at crunch times. In the top decile of hours for gas generation last month, day-ahead prices came in around £184 per megawatt-hour, about 42% higher than during the rest of September.

What pushed prices higher
Gas futures spiked as the Iran-linked conflict choked off movements out of the Persian Gulf; Qatari cargoes were affected when the Strait of Hormuz's closure took effect. Europe, meanwhile, is struggling to rebuild storage while competition for molecules intensifies. The government is monitoring wholesale energy prices as it tries to ease the squeeze on households. Bloomberg Economics, in a September report, projects UK energy bills could rise about 25% in January if gas supply disruptions continue.
What this means for your portfolio
Bigger wind contributions move the UK toward its 2030 target for a mostly clean power system, but price spikes show the market still hinges on gas when demand peaks. That mix means more renewables are helping cut emissions and fuel use, while your power costs can still swing with global gas shocks. Keep an eye on the winter outlook and those January bill forecasts if energy is a meaningful line in your budget.
