Deal talks and where they stand
Piper Sandler is evaluating a takeover of Perella Weinberg that would unite two boutique advisers focused on M&A, said a person who requested anonymity because the negotiations aren't public. The Wall Street Journal reported the talks first. The person said a deal could be reached in the coming weeks, but emphasized that nothing has been finalized.
Size and what each side brings
Piper Sandler's market value is about $4.9 billion, compared with nearly $1.6 billion for Perella Weinberg. A tie-up would combine two dealmaking shops and lands more than six years after Piper Jaffray Cos. and Sandler O'Neill & Partners LP combined to create Piper Sandler. Perella Weinberg would add bankers across sectors with coverage spanning areas such as energy and consumer and retail, among other sectors.
Market moves and comment status
At 10:37 a.m. in New York, Perella Weinberg shares were up more than 16% to $17.05, marking its largest intraday jump since late July. Meanwhile, Piper Sandler slipped 4% to $68.81. A Perella Weinberg representative declined to comment, and representatives for Piper Sandler did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

What this could mean for your portfolio
If a deal materializes, investors will be weighing sector depth, advisory fee potential, and whether added coverage in areas like energy and consumer and retail can smooth results through the cycle. For now, the takeaway is simple: even early-stage deal chatter can coincide with noticeable price moves, and that volatility shows up in real time.
