Australia's Lindian Resources is moving Kangankunde toward the finish line, about 80 kilometers north of Blantyre, Malawi's commercial center. During a discussion held at the Kangankunde mine, Executive Director Zac Komur stated, "We are currently in construction and will be in production at the end of the year." He added, "It should have been in production years ago, but we took the initiative to develop the project into production."
Komur said the development work points to mining roughly 500,000 tonnes a year of monazite concentrate ore from the deposit and, after processing, turning out about 20,000 tonnes of concentrate annually. At the same time, the company has launched a stage two feasibility study aimed at evaluating a ramp-up in concentrate output from 20,000 to 120,000 tonnes per year. He also noted that offtake agreements are already in place to ease exports into global markets.
