Khosla Family Purchases Seattle Seahawks for Record-Breaking $9.612 Billion

Summary:
  • The Khosla family, led by Vinod Khosla, has signed a contract to buy the Seattle Seahawks for $9.612 billion, a source with knowledge said.
  • The transaction requires NFL approval and would surpass the $6.05 billion record set by the Washington Commanders sale in 2023.
  • Vinod Khosla, who founded Khosla Ventures, has a net worth of $13.7 billion, per Forbes.

The Khosla family, with Vinod Khosla, will purchase the Seattle Seahawks following the directive of deceased owner Paul Allen, the team confirmed on Saturday. The Khoslas will take over as the majority owners, the Seahawks announced via social media.

"We are honored to be entrusted as the next stewards of the Seattle Seahawks," Vinod Khosla said in a statement. "We look forward to building on the winning legacy Paul Allen created and to earning the trust of the Seahawks organization and fans everywhere."

According to the team's announcement on Saturday, the Khosla family, led by Vinod Khosla, is set to acquire the Seahawks in line with the wishes of the late Paul Allen. On February 18, the Allen estate declared that it had started the sale process for the team, which recently earned its second Super Bowl title. Allen & Co., an investment bank, and law firm Latham & Watkins handled the sale, which was slated to run through February's offseason.

Under the agreement, the Khosla family must give up their share in the San Francisco 49ers. Khosla had become a minority owner of the 49ers in 2025, buying a 3.1% stake.

Since Paul Allen purchased the team from Ken Behring for $194 million back in 1997, the Seahawks have been under the ownership of the Allen family. Allen played a key role in ensuring the team stayed in Seattle, and the franchise is set to remain there after this sale. The team's lease at Lumen Field extends through 2032, with three additional 10-year renewal options.

After Allen, a Microsoft co-founder, passed away in 2018 at age 65 from non-Hodgkin lymphoma complications, his sister Jody has overseen the Seahawks and the NBA's Portland Trail Blazers. In September, the estate agreed to sell the Trail Blazers to a group led by Tom Dundon, who owns the Carolina Hurricanes. That agreement keeps the Trail Blazers in Portland, but it still requires a vote by the NBA Board of Governors.

In February's Super Bowl, the Seahawks defeated the New England Patriots 29-13.

The most recent NFL franchise sale occurred in 2023, when the Washington Commanders were purchased. An ownership group headed by Josh Harris, which counts Magic Johnson among its members, acquired the team from its previous owner, Dan Snyder, and his family, paying a then-record $6.05 billion.

The record-breaking price tag underscores the soaring value of NFL franchises, driven by lucrative media rights deals and stadium revenue. The Khosla family, with deep roots in technology and venture capital through Khosla Ventures, enters professional sports ownership at a time when team valuations are climbing rapidly. Vinod Khosla, a co-founder of Sun Microsystems, has long been an influential figure in Silicon Valley, and his involvement with the Seahawks marks a notable crossover between tech wealth and sports.
