What officials said and when
Speaking Wednesday local time on Fox News, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the U.S. and China agreed to extend their trade truce through Jan. 10. He noted that China still has additional deliverables to complete under the arrangement. His remarks coincided with Chinese President Xi Jinping's arrival for a state visit to Washington, D.C. that runs through Friday.
How the truce began and expectations
During their meeting in South Korea last October, Xi and Trump settled on a one-year pause on further trade escalation. That deal was set to lapse in November, but Bessent said it will now carry into early January. Heading into this week's summit, many watchers had anticipated a six month or longer extension.
Diplomatic scenes and other talks
Chinese state television aired Xi's arrival, showing President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump meeting Xi and First Lady of China Peng Liyuan beside the aircraft stairs. The segment highlighted Xi and his spouse exchanging handshakes with two children offering bouquets, while omitting any shot of the two presidents shaking hands. Ahead of Xi's trip, Bessent met Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng in New York, where he said they discussed creating a notification mechanism for incidents involving artificial intelligence.

Why it matters for your portfolio
Keeping tariffs lower and rare earths available can filter into everything from manufacturing costs to electronics supply, which touches a lot of holdings. An extension to Jan. 10 preserves the current footing for now, while any added deliverables from Beijing could shape the next move. When policy winds shift, the edge often goes to investors who track how it changes costs and timelines, not just headlines.
