Growth Outlook and the Data
Switzerland's State Secretariat for Economic Affairs boosted its 2026 growth call to 1.7% for GDP adjusted for large sports events, up from 0.9% in June. For next year, the projection stays at 1.6%. The upgrade follows a stronger than expected second quarter, though SECO cautioned the pharma-fueled pop "is likely to overstate underlying economic momentum."
Inflation and What's Lurking in the Background
SECO left its inflation view unchanged at 0.6% for both this year and next, aligning with the Swiss National Bank's June projections. SECO's brighter near-term growth outlook mirrors the OECD, which significantly raised its own estimates earlier this week. On Thursday, SECO also pointed to two pressure points: high oil prices and continuing strains in trade with the US.
Policy Expectations and the Franc Factor
Policymakers are widely expected to hold the policy rate at zero on Sept. 24, and they may tweak their language on potential franc intervention given the currency's notable drop against the euro lately. In July, Bloomberg reported, citing people familiar with thinking inside the central bank, that officials expect to keep the key rate on hold through the end of 2027.

Why Investors Should Care
A sturdier 2026 growth track alongside subdued inflation and a likely steady policy rate adds up to a steady but watchful backdrop. The catch is the risk list SECO underscored - pricier oil and ongoing US trade tensions - plus a softer franc. If you're watching Switzerland, this is a resilient economy with a few hot spots worth monitoring as you think about where your money is exposed.
