Who moved where
Mauritania brought back Mohamed Ould Abdel Vetah to run the energy and petroleum brief, succeeding Mohamed Ould Khaled, in the post since 2024. A presidential decree published by AMI confirmed other continuity moves: Codioro Moussa N'Guenore stays on as finance minister and Edy Ould Zeine continues to head mines and industry. Aïssata Lam was tapped to lead fisheries along with maritime infrastructure and ports.
Energy leadership appointments shape where exploration money flows. Market Briefs covers that sector free every morning.
Why Vetah matters
Vetah is well known in Nouakchott's energy circles. He served as oil minister when Mauritania and Senegal finalized a 2020 agreement to sell gas with BP Plc and Kosmos Energy for the Greater Tortue Ahmeyim development. Earlier in his career he led the state gas company SOMAGAZ and later worked as a consultant to Total E&P Mauritania.
What this means for you
With first gas flowing from Greater Tortue Ahmeyim in December 2024, its initial LNG cargo departed in April 2025, giving Vetah an active project to shepherd. On the maritime side, Aïssata Lam brings investor-outreach experience as the founding director general of APIM, and she helped steer the campaign that saw Sidi Ould Tah elected president of the African Development Bank in May 2025.
